The anime premieres January 2018. The anime's official website previously streamed a promotional video for the anime in June.
The previously announced cast members include:
Mamoru Hatakeyama (Shōwa Genroku Rakugo ShinjūSankarea: Undying Love) is directing the series at A-1 Pictures. Mizuno and tabletop RPG writer Shunsaku Yanoare in charge of series composition. WriteWorks is credited with the script, and Hiroshi Yakou (animation director for Prison SchoolHeavy Object) is designing the characters. Yuugo Kanno (Psycho-PassJoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable) is composing the music, and Yoshikazu Iwanami (Fate/ZeroKill la Kill) is sound director.
The fantasy action light novel series takes place on a continent ruled by chaos. The chaos breeds disaster, but the Lords of the continent have the power of "Crest" (Holy Seal) that can calm the chaos and protect the people. However, before anyone realizes it, the rulers cast aside their creed of purifying the chaos, and instead start to fight each other for each others' Crests and to gain dominion over one another. The novels center on Siluca, an isolated mage who scorns the Lords for abandoning their creed, and a wandering knight named Theo, who is on a journey to train to one day liberate his hometown, which is under tyrannical rule. Siluca and Theo make an everlasting oath to each other as master and servant, and work together to reform this continent dominated by wars and chaos.
Mizuno and Miyuu launched the series in 2013, and Kadokawa shipped the eighth volume on November 19.
Mizuno previously wrote the Record of Lodoss War light novel series. That series began as a series of magazine articles that recounted the pencil-and-paper role-playing game sessions of players who called themselves Group SNE. Those fantasy adventures evolved into a series of novels by Mizuno that now have over 10 million copies in print.
The novels in turn inspired manga, two original video anime projects, a full-length television anime series, and two animated film projects. Central Park Media released the 1990 Record of Lodoss War video anime series and the 1998 Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight television anime sequel in North America. One of the animated film projects is Welcome to Lodoss Island! (Yōkoso Lodoss Tō e!), a short that featured the characters in super-deformed form. The super-deformed anime series Meshimase Lodoss-tō Senki Sorette Oishii no? most recently premiered in April 2014.
