Edo-era manga won Japan Cartoonists Association Award in 1984
A live-action film adaptation of Hinako Sugiura's Edo-period manga Gasso is currently in production and is slated to open in Fall 2015.
Gasso tells the story of the young men who were part of the Shōgitai, a group of former Tokugawa retainers who fought to oppose the Meiji government in the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Aya Watanabe(Carnation, Long Goodbye) will write the screenplay and Tatsuo Kobayashi (Casablanca no Tantei) will direct the film. Yūya Yagira (Aoi Honō, Nobunaga Concerto) will play Goku Akitsu, Kōji Seto (Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Judge) will play Masanosuke Yoshimori, and Amane Okayama (Another) will play Teijirō Fukuhara.
Seirindo Co., Ltd. published the manga in its monthly experimental magazine Garo, and the manga won the excellence award at the Japan Cartoonists Association Awards in 1984.
Sugiura made her manga debut in 1980 in the experimental magazine Garo, and made her mark with intricately researched historical stories about Japan's Edo period. Her unique storytelling won the Japan Cartoonists' Association Award in 1984 and the Bunshun Manga Award in 1988. She serialized Sarusuberi in Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, Ltd.'s Manga Sunday magazine from 1983 to 1987. She passed away in 2005 at the age of 46.
Production I.G announced in April that the studio is animating Sarusuberi with Annecy-winning director Keiichi Hara (Summer Days with Coo, Colorful).
