Thanks to the star Ryan Reynolds' various enthusiastic promotional activities, including a Tokyo bus tour and a photo session with cosplayers at Zojoji Temple (where Hugh Jackman's 2013 film The Wolverine was shot), Fox's Deadpool 2 brought in 375 million yen on 239,000 admission over the weekend, which was enough to finally take the top place at the box office from Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer in its eighth weekend.
The sequel film opened in Japan on June 1, two weeks later than the US, and earned 536 million yen from its first three-day run from Friday through Sunday, which was 113% of that of the first film released in 2016. Judging from the opening weekend result, Deadpool 2 is expected to make around 2 billion yen in Japan.
In its eighth weekend, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer dropped to third place, losing its No.1
place for the first time. As reported, the 22nd Conan film has already become the most successful
one in the 22-year-old anime franchise, its total domestic earnings has reached a massive 7.8 billion
yen (71 million US dollars).
Meanwhile, Marvel and Disney's Avengers: Infinity War, which has never taken the top place in the
Japanese box office, disappeared from the box office Top 10 in its sixth weekend. But it has made
3.62 billion yen and become the top-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film in Japan, surpassing
The Avengers that earned 3.61 billion yen in 2012.
