Hetalia's Hiroshi Watanabe animates time-traveling otome game for female players
Studio DEEN is animating the film adaptation of Broccoli's Meiji Tokyo Renka visual novel game, and the film will open this July. Hiroshi Watanabe (Hetalia The Beautiful World) is directing under the supervision of Yukiko Uoizumi, the scenario writer of the game series.
The movie's teaser website describes the story's prologue: On an evening lit by a crimson full moon, an ordinary high school girl named Mei Ayazuki meets a self-proclaimed magician named Charlie at a festival. Through Charlie's magic, she time-travels to the Meiji era in Tokyo, where she meets and falls in love with various great historical figures from that time period. The game stars Toshiyuki Morikawa asCharlie, Daisuki Namikawa as Ōgai Mori, KENN as Shunsō Hishida, Kousuke Toriumi as Otojirō Kawakami, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Kyōka Izumi, Jun Fukuyama as Gorō Fujita, and Shinnosuke Tachibana as Yakumo Koizumi.
Yoshiko Nakamura (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, Hiiro no Kakera - The Tamayori Princess Saga) wrote the screenplay, and Akio Hirakawa (chief animation director onHakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East) adapted Karu's original character designs for animation. Mages. is credited with the original story.
The game is also getting a sequel in April.
