Nintendo posts 1st operating profit since 2011
Nintendo announced on Thursday that it is partnering with Universal Parks & Resorts to bring Nintendo-themed attractions to Universal theme parks in the future. Nintendo's press release notes that the "immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal's theme parks and will feature Nintendo's most famous characters and games."
The two companies will reveal more information about specific attractions in the future. The press release noted that the companies' creative teams are currently working to create the specific concepts.
Universal Studios Japan in Osaka has previously hosted attractions based on various video games such as Monster Hunter and Resident Evil, along with various anime-themed attractions such as those for One Piece, Attack on Titan, and Evangelion.
Additionally, Nintendo announced on Thursday its year-end results for the fiscal year ending in March 2015. The company posted its first operating income profit since 2011. The company's operating income was 24.7 billion yen (about US$207 million). Additionally, Nintendo posted its first net income profit since fiscal year 2013. The net income profit was 41.8 billion yen (about US$351 million). Nintendo had previously forecasted in January that it would gross a net income of 30 billion yen (about US$251 million).
The company noted that the increase in net income for the year was due to the unexpected change in conversion rate between the US Dollar and the Japanese Yen.
Nintendo had posted a smaller net income profit of 7.099 billion yen (about US$59.6 million by today's conversion) in 2013, but for that same year it's operating income was a loss of 36.4 billion yen (about US$305 million by today's conversion).
Last year Nintendo posted a net income loss of 23.2 billion yen (about US$194 million by today's conversion) and an operating income loss of 46.4 billion yen (about US$389 million by today's conversion).
Nintendo sold 9.94 million copies globally of its Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire games in fiscal year 2015. The company's other big sellers for the fiscal year were Super Smash Bros. forNintendo 3DS (6.75 million copies globally), Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U (5.11 million copies globally), and Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U (3.65 million copies globally).
The company also revealed that it sold 8.73 million units globally in its Nintendo 3DS family of handheld consoles in fiscal year 2015, and it also sold 62.74 units of software for the variousNintendo 3DS systems. Nintendo sold 3.38 million units globally of the Wii U console and 24.40 million units of software for the Wii U.
